Thyroid Support

Thyroid hormones are an important part of maintaining various body functions, so when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones naturally, medications might be needed to replace them. At APS Pharmacy, we offer a variety of compounded medications to help you provide your patients with the thyroid support they need.

Hypothyroidism is the most common reason for needing thyroid support. Whether the hypothyroidism is caused by disease, surgery, radiation, or a malfunctioning pituitary gland, the low thyroid hormone levels cause the body’s processes to slow down, and patients may complain about feeling colder, tiring easily, dry skin, constipation, or forgetfulness. Once testing has confirmed hypothyroidism, thyroid medication can be used to replicate normal thyroid functioning.

The two thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) can both be used in thyroid support therapy. The structure of the pure T4 and T3 is identical to the naturally produced hormones by the thyroid gland.  T4 is the inactive form of the thyroid hormones and is converted to active T3 in the body.. For some patients, a combination of  T4 and T3 works best. With your understanding of your patients and their various needs, you can recommend a medical thyroid support program that’s best suited for each individual patient. And of course, our pharmacist team is always happy to answer any questions you or your patient might have.

At APS Pharmacy, our pharmacists are experts at compounding Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) into patient-specific compounds in several dosage forms. For thyroid support, we offer compounded T3 and T4 medications in various forms and strengths, as well as different filler options for your chemically sensitive patients.  We also offer numerous brand and generic manufactured medications.
